Today I am struggling. Literally, no better time to reflect and identify what I am grateful for. This morning I woke up anxious and irritated, for no identifiable reason. I rushed out of the door to a doctor’s appointment, got lost in a loop of TX highway intersections, and arrived at the stroke of 8am. This doctor’s office is notoriously always late. So I came in anticipating that as the first appointment, they would already be late. They did not disappoint. 25 minutes behind. When I got home with all of my angst and agitation, I went out to the back patio for my morning yoga practice. The virtual instructor asked that I choose my intention for the day: today I intend to remain rooted in calm. The universe laughed. No less than 10 min into my flow, Mason, my 113 lb pup, accidentally knocked over my travel mug of coffee all over my yoga mat, blanket, leg strap, basically everywhere. I was calm. I wasn’t happy, but I wasn’t affected by it. I cleaned it up and then continued my flow with Mason by my side.
For me, intention works best when I set it as a goal: identify it, set it, and use it as a guide. It must be practiced, called upon, acted upon. As I reflect upon today, I am grateful for:
- Setting an intention & following through
- My sweet dog Mason who just wants to sit as close as possible to me…even during yoga
- A work life balance that allows and encourages time to include exercise, meditation, and self care, especially during these difficult times.
I hope you consider actively setting a daily intention for yourself. For me, while it doesn’t guarantee how my day will go, it does guide how I can react or the energy I put out into the world. Go intentionally, love unconditionally, exhale gratefully.
